Coronavirus pandemic and single-used plastic waste

Updated: Oct 6, 2020

With the global pandemic Covid-19 and its consequences, we all have got to deal with so many social situations, we have to isolate ourselves, we have to obey the rules of social distancing and regional lockdown.

Even though the world does not operate fully as it used to during the pandemic, we are unintentionally hurting our planet. Bangkok, City of Thailand has committed to banning plastic waste from the start of 2020, but the city’s single used plastic waste has arisen 50% percent more than before.

This problem is seen more apparent in the restaurants and food retailers, and online shopping systems, with home delivery services. Many households are also storing a large number of grocery products that are packed in single-use plastic bags.

It is hard to maintain a proper way to manage the misuse of plastics under this pandemic situation. But there are certain types of things we can do to reduce our daily single-use plastic waste. Instead of ordering food from outside, we should bring our own lunch box or Tupper ware to the restaurants, or we should encourage ourselves to cook by ourselves.

An enormous amount of surgical masks, surgical gloves, hand sanitizer bottles which are made of plastics, were apparent more than average and usual. Masks waste and glove waste have appeared more in the landfill, the waster streams, and in the ocean. We can use reusable clothes masks, gloves to reduce the use of surgical masks. We can purchase large bottles of hand sanitizer instead of small ones, and we can also refill them from the large one into small ones as a portable hand sanitizer.

This can be hard, but let’s fight it together.

Stay healthy, wash your hands, and get your vitamins, and last but not least: don’t forget to practice the policy of “Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle”.
